My Learning Journey

The moment when my English facilitator, Ms Misty Cook asked us to do a critical reflection, I was stumped. It took me quite a while to think about what I had been through in my learning journey, especially in identifying the areas of improvement in my studies. This reflection aids me in doing a comparison between the two study methods in which will help me in the long term.

Depending on individuals, they each have their own method of studying in trying to excel in studies. There are both correct and incorrect ways. For example, the correct method is to study earlier before the examinations and fully understand the concept behind each subject taught. In contrast, I adopted the wrong method which is to study near examination period and memorize whatever I was taught. However, by memorizing, I will tend to forget everything I have learnt straight after the examinations. There were times where I seemed helpless in answering the enquiries of my fellow juniors, as memorising does not aid me in the long run.  This is ironic when I was questioned how I could score well in my examinations yet I could not answer questions I have done before.

In order to avoid the awkward situations and prevent it from happening again, it would be better for me to adopt the other method of studying.  This requires me to change my habit of laziness, as well as to understand the meaning of each point that is taught. In addition, I should read more resources in relation to my interest. This will not only widen my knowledge, but also benefit me in studies which are beyond what is given in lecture notes.

There is an idiom saying, ‘Actions speak louder than words’. Instead of simply saying what I hope to do, I would like to execute all these that I have mentioned above.

  1. Sheila, I can totally relate myself with how you felt in the past. I was just like you. I adopted the wrong way of studying, which is the pure memorisation of content, without understanding it. The reflection is very organised and precise in showing what you had done wrong and what you are going to do about it now. Thanks for sharing! :-)

  2. Hi Sheila, your content is well organised and comprehensive.
I am also learning not to just memorizing the things without understanding it first
and I strongly agree on this idiom "actions speak louder than words"
    Keep it up :D

  3. Hi Sheila, my exact sentiments to the part where you mentioned about memorizing what we were taught right before the examination. It is because that was exactly what I did as well during my secondary and polytechnics days in exchange for more playful times. Well, I am positive that it is never too late for the change and I am grateful to you for reminding myself as well. We all know the past method of studying would not work in the university. Good luck to you and everyone!

  4. Sheila:
Content and organisation: I enjoyed reading your work. You reflected upon your experiences in changing your methods of studying, and you recognized a more effective way of studying. A very coherence piece of writing indeed. You first described the event, and then reflected upon how and what you need to do to change. Good job!
    Language—Just a few minor errors:
    1. Think about why you should use simple present tense ‘I tend to’ instead of ‘I will tend’.
However, by memorizing, I will tend to forget everything I have learnt straight after the examinations.

    2. Think about why you should use ‘when’ instead of ‘where’.
There were times where I seemed helpless in answering the enquiries of my fellow juniors, as memorising does not aid me in the long run.

    1. Dear Ms Misty Cook,

Thank you for the feedback on my reflective writing.

      For point 1:
Instead of using Simple future tense, 'I will tend to', i should use simple present tense, 'I tend to' because 'I will tend' represents that my action will occur in the future which does not apply to this sentence.

      For point 2:
I have done a research and it stated that 'When' is used for time whereas 'Where' is used for place.
