Feedback

This module has taught me a lot in academic writing, from language to content, as well as organisation. In the past, I used to have this habit of questioning the reader by prompting a question in my writing. Only recently then I found out that it is actually redundant, and there will be tendency for me to make mistakes. Besides, I have also better understood how to write a thesis statement correctly. Writing a thesis statement is one of my weaknesses, but now I understand how it can be written.

Language is still my weakness thus far. There were times whereby I do not know if I have made mistakes in my writing. After reading several times, everything seemed correct to me until when I got the feedback. Thus, there is no perfection in everyone’s writing. Hence, a lot of practices need to be done and the feedbacks given further help us in improving ourselves from performing the same mistakes again. This English module really taught me a lot in correcting my past mistakes and it is a great platform for me to improve on what I lack of.

Going through my feedback on summary and reader response, I did make necessary changes as I understood the mistakes I have made. By reflecting my grade for writing, I understand that I need to improve a lot on my language and content.

The audio and written feedback is a great way to get feedback other than face-to-face. I think the audio is very useful as it is clearer and concise compared to the written one. This is a great tool for feedback and should be recommended to use in other courses.

My Learning Journey

The moment when my English facilitator, Ms Misty Cook asked us to do a critical reflection, I was stumped. It took me quite a while to think about what I had been through in my learning journey, especially in identifying the areas of improvement in my studies. This reflection aids me in doing a comparison between the two study methods in which will help me in the long term.

Depending on individuals, they each have their own method of studying in trying to excel in studies. There are both correct and incorrect ways. For example, the correct method is to study earlier before the examinations and fully understand the concept behind each subject taught. In contrast, I adopted the wrong method which is to study near examination period and memorize whatever I was taught. However, by memorizing, I will tend to forget everything I have learnt straight after the examinations. There were times where I seemed helpless in answering the enquiries of my fellow juniors, as memorising does not aid me in the long run.  This is ironic when I was questioned how I could score well in my examinations yet I could not answer questions I have done before.

In order to avoid the awkward situations and prevent it from happening again, it would be better for me to adopt the other method of studying.  This requires me to change my habit of laziness, as well as to understand the meaning of each point that is taught. In addition, I should read more resources in relation to my interest. This will not only widen my knowledge, but also benefit me in studies which are beyond what is given in lecture notes.

There is an idiom saying, ‘Actions speak louder than words’. Instead of simply saying what I hope to do, I would like to execute all these that I have mentioned above.
